Sonu (Kartik Aaryan) and Titu (Sunny Singh) are best friends from school, almost family, so much that Sonu refers to Titu’s mom as mummy. Therefore, your tolerance or your ability to be entertained by this mess depends completely on the amount of patience you have to digest this array of characters living their life in a universe of their own. The wealth signalling and moral vacuity on show here is almost offensive. Johar’s films’ protagonists may also be oppressors, often of the tacit kind, but in Ranjan’s films, the oppression is worn like a badge of honour and paraded around. The arrogance is stripped off in aid of the apparent goodness and purity - whatever is left of it - to shine through. But there is an unspecified malice that hovers around films like Luv Ranjan’s while the likes of Johar only want to focus on the saccharine. You may ask what’s new and point out that the Karan Johars of the world have made a laundry list of movies featuring these families. Unsurprisingly, Yo Yo Honey Singh is one of the music directors of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. It is the quintessential Delhi family whose soundtrack could be anything from Yo Yo Honey Singh. Of course, they live in Delhi and party in Gurgaon. They travel only in BMWs and Audis, and throw stacks of notes at each other during weddings. I have to admit that I really liked Alok Nath and Virendra Saxena in this film. They belong to families that choose destination wedding because it is cheaper (I’d really like to hear the math on this) and say no to dowry because it is the modern thing to do, not just the right thing to do. At one point Ishita Raj Sharma’s character says “I am here in a backless dress without any point”, and that is pretty much the description of the character she is playing in the movie. Sunny Singh hardly has anything here to perform. Nushrat Bharucha also tries to make Sweety less animated.
Katik Aaryan has tried to make Sonu look real even though his suspicions in the movie are largely logic less. Luv Ranjan’s frequent collaborators are yet again the main stars of this film. The frames and sets aren’t really interested in being authentic.
The songs are like a typical T Series album with wide range of songs making no real impact on the narrative. But generalizing them as bitches is a really harsh thing and no matter how hard you try to cover it with funny jokes, it will stick out.
Having villainous female character isn’t a bad thing. I am not trying hard to be a feminist here. If you are someone who immediately shared the gold digger prank videos on YouTube without giving it much thought, the chance of you liking a movie like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is high. And the following background score has lyrics that have words like gold digger. In the interval scene of the movie the Sweety tells Sonu that in the fight between friendship and girl, girl always wins. With Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, it becomes more and more clear what exactly the plan of Luv Ranjan is. When I saw Pyaar Ka Punchnaama, it was difficult for me to say whether Luv Ranjan was trying to be misogynistic or should I consider him using the liberty of being a creator. The Punchnaama formula continues here as well, as we get to see controlling, cunning and manipulative female characters. From the clothes to attitude, the heroines here are opportunists. There are actually two girls paired opposite to Titu and Luv Ranjan has written those characters only keeping in mind the fact that they shouldn’t be liked in any way.
The film has certain dialogues and scenes that will definitely make you laugh even if you can’t agree with the politics of the film. Luv Ranjan has to be appreciated for packaging misogyny in the entertaining format. But there the focus was more on how incapable was the men in handling women. Pyaar Ka Punchnaama movies also had the female bitching agenda. How it ends is what this movie all about. And once Sweety tells him her real intention, the war between the best friend and the bride begins.
So finally when Titu took the decision to get married to a seemingly perfect girl Sweety, Sonu becomes suspicious about her. Sonu has saved him from all that by being protective. Titu is a very silly guy who doesn’t know when a girl is using him. Sonu and Titu are best friends from childhood.
